The answer is it depends on what kind of mold and how badly it&#8217;s infected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Molds belong to families like mushrooms, and like mushrooms all molds aren&#8217;t created equal.&nbsp; One of the biggest differences is whether they live on live or dead material.&nbsp; Both Powdery Mildew and Botrytris are molds that live on living tissue, and produce no known aflatoxins, while molds like Aspergillus and Penicillin are composting molds living on dead tissue and do produce aflatoxins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the purposes of this discussion, aflatoxins are evil spirits that induce acute hepatic necrosis, resulting later in cirrhosis or carcinoma of the liver.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>See:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK350562\/\"><strong>https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK350562\/<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>and<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/poisonousplants.ansci.cornell.edu\/toxicagents\/aflatoxin\/aflatoxin.html\"><a href=\"http:\/\/poisonousplants.ansci.cornell.edu\/toxicagents\/aflatoxin\/aflatoxin.html\">Cornell University Department of Animal Science<\/a><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even they don&#8217;t produce aflatoxins, some folks can still have a Type 1 allergic reaction to Botrytis spores and mycelium and both Powdery Mildew and Botrytis have a strong moldy odor and taste that is off putting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately that smell and taste is produced by the spores and mycelium, which can be filtered out using a 0.2 micron syringe filter.&nbsp; Once gone, the smell and taste is gone as well, as is ostensibly any allergic reactions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We typically vacuum filter the alcohol solution using a #1 Whatman medium filter, followed by a 1 micron filter, and lastly a 0.2 micron syringe filter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is an inexpensive vacuum filtration setup using a Buckner funnel, an Erlenmeyer vacuum flask, and an AC rotary vane vacuum pump.&nbsp; Works well, but does require frequent oil changes in the vacuum pump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211026154625im_\/https%3A\/\/graywolfslair.com\/images\/Vacuum_filtration_setup.jpg?w=525&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>Buchner funnel vacuum filtration set up<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211026154625im_\/https%3A\/\/graywolfslair.com\/images\/Syringe_filter.jpg?w=525&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>0.2 Micron syringe filter<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An OK process for small amounts, but for industrial quantities, filter presses, followed by cross flow microfiltration can filter to 0.2 microns and can be sized accordingly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not so easy with Aspergillus or Penicillin, which do produce aflatoxins and which can&#8217;t be removed by filtration.&nbsp; Folks can also have an allergic reaction to its spores<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aspergillus produces more serious health effects from allergic reactions to spores and mycelium,&nbsp; as well as invasively colonating tissue like lungs, and from aflatoxins, but Penicillium sp. can cause keratitis as well as infections in the inner ear, respiratory system, and urinary tract.&nbsp;<br>Allergic reactions to Aspergillus spores include both Type 1 allergic reactions, as well as Type III hypersensitivity, pneumonitis, and others.&nbsp; A. fumigatus can induce both allergic<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>bronchopulmonary aspergillosis and allergic fungal sinusitis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As opportunistic pathogens growing at body temperature, they are especially invasive to individuals with compromised immune systems.<br><strong>Sooo, how do you tell the differenc<\/strong>e, beyond the clues of whether it started out moldy or molded during drying and curing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a couple handy tools.&nbsp; One is an NDT blacklight, and the other is a 1000X microscope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211026154625im_\/https%3A\/\/graywolfslair.com\/images\/NDT_Blacklight.jpg?w=525&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>NDT Blacklight<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NDT black light was developed for fluorescent penetrant and magnetic particle inspection, but works well for our application, which is to cause any aflatoxins or Aspergillus mold material to fluoresce green, giving an indication of their presence and severity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second tool is to visually identify the mold using a 1000X microscope.&nbsp; Here is a picture of our trusty Zeiss, but a good modern alternative is one of the less expensive modern generation of 1000X USB microscopic cameras, but look for one with good optics at that magnification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211026154625im_\/https%3A\/\/graywolfslair.com\/images\/1000X_Microscope.jpg?w=525&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1000X Microscope<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And here is what the three different molds look like at extreme magnification, as well as mounted and stained in the last, to better demonstrate the Aspergillum form to look for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211026154625im_\/https%3A\/\/graywolfslair.com\/images\/Powdery_Mildew.jpg?w=525&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Powdery Mildew<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211026154625im_\/https%3A\/\/graywolfslair.com\/images\/Botrytis1.jpg?w=525&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Botrytis&nbsp;
